What Is a Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator is a tool that computes the gratuity amount to add to a service bill, typically at a restaurant, salon, or other service establishment. You enter the pre-tax bill total, choose a tip percentage, and optionally divide the result among multiple people. The calculator outputs the tip amount, the new total, and each person's share — eliminating the mental math at the table.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount — type the subtotal before tax. You can use any currency; the calculator works with any numbers.
  2. Choose a tip percentage — tap one of the preset buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or type a custom percentage. The results update instantly as you type.
  3. Set the number of people — use the + and − buttons to set how many people are splitting. With 1 person selected, you see the individual total only.
  4. Read the results — the three boxes show you the tip amount, total bill, and each person's share. Round up the per-person figure to ensure the full tip is left.

How to Calculate a Tip by Hand

The mental math for tipping is easier than most people think. Here are the most useful shortcuts:

  • 10% tip: Move the decimal point one place left. On a $47 bill, 10% = $4.70.
  • 20% tip: Find 10%, then double it. On a $47 bill, 10% = $4.70, so 20% = $9.40.
  • 15% tip: Find 10% ($4.70) and add half of that ($2.35). Total = $7.05.
  • 25% tip: Find 10% ($4.70), double it to 20% ($9.40), then add half of 10% ($2.35). Total = $11.75.

Alternatively: multiply the bill by the tip rate. A 20% tip on $64.50 is $64.50 × 0.20 = $12.90. Total bill: $77.40. Split 4 ways: $19.35 each.

Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?

The etiquette question no one agrees on: tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total? Most tipping guides suggest calculating on the pre-tax amount, since the tax goes to the government rather than to the server. However, the practical difference is small. On a $60 meal with 10% tax ($6), tipping 20% on $60 gives $12.00 vs tipping on $66 gives $13.20. Either is acceptable — what matters most is that you leave something.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a tip? expand_more
To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage expressed as a decimal. For example, a 18% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 0.18 = $9.00. The total to pay is $50 + $9 = $59. To split among 3 people, divide by 3: $59 ÷ 3 = $19.67 per person. GlintKit's tip calculator does all of this automatically as you type.
What is the standard tip percentage? expand_more
In the United States, the standard tip at restaurants is 18–20% for good service. 15% is considered acceptable for average service; 25% or more for exceptional service. For other services: hair salons 15–20%, taxi and rideshare 15–20%, hotel housekeeping $2–5 per night, food delivery 15–20% of the order total. Norms vary by country — in many European countries, rounding up the bill is more common than percentage tipping.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? expand_more
Etiquette varies by region, but most servers prefer tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax goes to the government rather than the restaurant. The difference is small — on a $50 pre-tax bill in a jurisdiction with 10% tax, tipping 20% on $50 gives $10 vs tipping on $55 gives $11. Either is acceptable. Our calculator uses the amount you enter as-is, so enter either the pre-tax or post-tax amount based on your preference.
How do you split a bill with a tip evenly? expand_more
Add the tip to the total bill first, then divide by the number of people. For example: $120 bill + 20% tip ($24) = $144 total ÷ 4 people = $36 per person. This approach ensures each person pays an equal share of both the meal and the tip. If dividing doesn't come out evenly, round each person's share up to the nearest dollar or cent so the server receives the full tip.
