About this tool
Paste or type any text and get a live count of words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time. Everything updates as you type, and nothing is uploaded anywhere — the counting happens entirely on your device.
Word limits are everywhere: essays, meta descriptions, LinkedIn posts, ad copy, abstracts. A reliable counter saves you from pasting text into a word processor just to check a number. Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, a common average for adult readers.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the box.
- Watch the counters update live below the editor.
- Use the reading-time estimate to gauge length for blog posts or speeches.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Any sequence of characters separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word. Hyphenated words like “state-of-the-art” count as a single word, which matches how most word processors count.
Is my text stored or sent to a server?
No. The counter is plain JavaScript running in your browser tab. Close the tab and the text is gone.
How accurate is the reading time?
It assumes 200 words per minute, a widely used average for adults reading non-technical English. Dense or technical material is read more slowly.
